RIP Dan O'Bannon 1946 - 2009

Dan O'Bannon, the screenwriter of classic genre films such as Alien and Total Recall and cult favourites Dead and Buried, Dark Star and Return of the Living Dead, has died at the age of 63 in Los Angeles following a short illness.

O'Bannon attended USC film school in the early '70s where he met director John Carpenter and the pair collaborated on Carpenter's debut feature Dark Star. O'Bannon co-wrote, edited, supervised the special effects and portrayed Sgt Pinback in this existential sci-fi comedy.

O'Bannon soon quit his job on the visual effects team on Star Wars to begin screenwriting full time. His first project after Dark Star was a script titled Star Beast - co-written by Ronald Shusett - which would later be filmed as Alien by Ridley Scott. The writer would also go on to work with Tobe Hooper on Lifeforce and Invaders From Mars.

O'Bannon is survived by his wife Diane Louise Lindley and their son Adam. He made significant contributions to the genre and will be sadly missed.

What sad news :( First Naschy at the beginning of the month, now this! Looks like I'm popping in my VHS of Return of.. and raising a glass to an awesome talent.

Sad news indeed...Dead And Buried and Return Of The Living Dead are two of my all time favourites. RIP Dan.

I too was very bummed about his passing. He did work on some of my all time favorite film and his impact on genre cinema is very important, if not long lasting.

Shankill Graveyard

While staying with my parents recently in my home town of Lurgan, County Armagh, I naturally decided to pay a visit to a few of the local graveyards. Top of my list was Shankill Graveyard. Located just outside the town centre, and surrounded by a residential area, the site upon which Shankill cemetery stands was a place of worship in earlier centuries. Shankill Parish church was originally situated here before it was eventually moved to the town centre. The outline of a double ring fort is still noticeable. Amongst those at rest in the cemetery are the Brownlow family, who established the town in 1610 when they were given land beside Lough Neagh by the British government during the Plantation. They eventually contributed to the development of the linen industry the town became famous for throughout the seventeenth century. When I began to flesh out my thoughts and hastily scribbled notes on The Black Cat , I ended up spewing forth a tangent about why I find Lucio Fulci’s film work so utterly repellent, disturbing, depressing and horrifying.
